Dawn has attended every one of our group’s meetings and has taken a real interest in sharing her knowledge with others in the group. She taught classes in May 2019 about “Mastering Manual Mode”.
Now let’s get to know Dawn a little more.
Q: Please tell us a little about yourself?
A: Hello! I am Dawn Weed. I have lived in Oregon for 5 years, but it feels like we’ve been here forever. I am a full-time stay-at-home-mom and a very limited part-time photographer for my business Dawn E Photography. My husband and I have been married for almost 11 years; we have two crazy kids, two furry cats, and a tortoise. I enjoy a quiet cup of coffee in the morning, running for fun, and expressing my artistic side through photography.
Q: What got you interested in photography?
A: I took a photography class in high school, back when most cameras were still film. Even before that, I’ve always found joy in taking photos.
Q: What is your favorite subject matter when taking photos?
A: I love taking photos of my kids; they just grow so fast I feel I need to capture everything so I don’t forget what they were like at a certain stage. I love a good sunset photo too.
Q: What kind of gear do you use most often?
A: I use my Nikon D7100; or my iPhone.
Q: Which is your favorite camera and lens?
A: I only have the one Nikon, so therefore it is my favorite. My favorite lens is my 35mm 1.8G; it makes me work harder for the shot I want.
Q: When you go on one of your photo adventures, what all do you take with you?
A: my Nikon, of course! My 35mm; and sometimes my Tamron 18-270mm for the wider shots. Depends on where I’m going or if I feel like a challenge.
Q: What is your education in photography?
A: As previously mentioned, I took a course in high school then just fiddled around for many years. Once I got my “fancy” camera, I took some online courses through The Photographer’s Element website, which sadly, is no longer in business. Once I found my “niche” I took several specific courses on the Creative Live website. Which I still do, and highly recommend.
Q: Among your works, which one is your favorite and why?
A: I really love taking photos on our family vacations. I get a little burnt out afterwards, but it’s all worth it when I can look back at the photos and “feel” what our adventures were like.
I also have a series of photos from over the course of a year of the “Twin Oaks” on the north side of Oregon. (as you’re coming into town on Main, just after M) I took one photo during each of the seasons and hung them above my fireplace. I love trees, and these oaks are one of the many reasons I fell in love with Oregon.
Q: Where in the Oregon area do you often find yourself taking photos?
A: I have no one specific place; Lerner Conservation Park is a great place for nature photos though.
Q: Please share a little about your photography business.
A: Dawn E Photography is a documentary family photography business. I thrive on telling a story and finding/showing meaning in the mundane everyday occurrences in families. I don’t pose, and I really prefer to not have matching outfits in pictures. I recommend families to “come as you are and do what you love.” A session usually consists of me going to a family’s home and documenting something special they like to do. Whether it is making pancakes, playing with legos, or riding bikes and blowing bubbles. All of those things are special and worth documenting. This is how I like to capture my own family, as it is so very special to me. I love to do this for others, as I know that they will find it just as meaningful.
