Okay, let's discuss storage for your photos ---- and for your data. It's time to get a little 'geeky' on this website. Ready?
People use online photo storage websites for a variety of reasons, primarily to share photos with others. However, please don't overlook that these online storage websites are important for backing up only your photos. Are you backing up your other data?
Below are two lists of companies who provide storage for your backups. The first list is of companies who provide storage for all your backup needs. The second list is of companies who primarily target people to store their photos with them.
Want to know a little secret about all these companies? Those who offer storage for just your photos oftentimes are not able to provide storage for your data. If you're okay with that, okay - but be aware that these companies are telling you that their service is specialized to photographers, thus making it an attractive method for one to choose. These companies do offer some methods of sharing that is set up to be very convenient for you. Because they sell you on the idea that their service, specialized for your photos, they oftentimes charge more money for their services. Wow! Do you know that companies that offer storage for all of your data, to include your photos, oftentimes are less expensive than those companies specializing in photo storage only. That's right! You can back up ALL YOUR DATA for less money per year. Nearly all these companies who offer full storage have one or more methods of sharing your data, to include your photos. So, do you really want to pay $10.00 per month (or more), as an example, to back up only your photos, or would you prefer to backup all your data for sometimes half the price?
If you choose a company to store your photos or all your data (this is cloud service in case you're curious), you should shop around for the best service. A word of advice when choosing a company - choose one that provides the most storage to meet your needs. Many companies, especially those that "specialize" in photo storage, will have tiered rates for the amount of storage you want. Really? While the hardware for this storage was quite expensive at one time, now-a-days that hardware is much less expensive. However, many companies providing cloud service take advantage of telling you just how expensive it is for them to store your data. How much difference is there, in cost, for a company to provide 500GB of storage to you, compared to say 2TB. There is not much difference, even when multiplied by the many customers of a particular company. It is an easy money-maker for those companies!
So, it is our opinion (and advice) that you consider using a cloud-based service and backup ALL YOUR IMPORTANT DATA. There are many advantages to having offsite storage, something that businesses have done for decades. Even before cloud service was around, and even with cloud service, most reputable companies take regular backups of their data and those backups are stored offsite - in the event of a disaster.
Look over the lists below, do some research on them, and then consider which is best for you. Some good review websites to consider are PC Mag, Tom's Guide, and Top Ten Reviews - to name just three. Also, do some Internet searches on those companies and services you're considering. Don't let some slick salesperson, or worse - a computer tech - smooth talk you into their service by simply throwing computer terms at you. Also, when you've narrowed down your choices, do an Internet search and compare those companies and services. For example, if you were narrowed down your search to Backblaze, Carbonite and iDrive - just search on 'backblaze vs carbonate vs drive' and you'll get some results to read.
The lists shown below are just a few of the more popular services offered. If you were to do Internet searches on computer backups and photo backups - you may get hundreds, if not thousands, of companies offering this service.
Are you confused by all this? Do you have questions about cloud-based services and how to set up your backups (they can be set to run automatically, in case you're interested)? Do you want to just talk "geek"? Don't let companies throw computer terms at you, which can be confusing and can sometimes be just 'fluff' on their part to get you to buy their service. Remember too, even review sites can offer skewed results. Those review sites are probably in an affiliate program with the companies they are reviewing - meaning they get money if you click on a company's link coming from the review sites website. They make money off you too. Send me an email and I'll be glad to discuss these with you. Just click here.
